One of the greatest things about books is that you can read about places much different from you’re own. You can meet diverse people, new customs, and faraway places that you’ve never been or would like to visit again. One could even say that it’s much cheaper than having to buy a plane ticket.
Over the years, I’ve read a lot of books set in other countries from the United States. Mostly because they’re a lot of fun and American books are usually similar and familiar. Here I present to you some books that I’ve read that are set outside the U.S.

- Longbourn, Jo Baker. (England)
- The Secret Rooms: A True Story of a Haunted Castle, a Plotting Duchess, and a Family Secret, Catherine Bailey. (England)
- Outlander, Diane Gabaldon. (England and Scotland) Note: I’d only read if you’re really into romance. I read because I thought it’d be more historical, but it turns out it’s very romantic.
- Ring, Koji Suzuki. (Japan) You’ve probably heard of the cult movie classic The Ring. This book is what the movies are based on.
- The White Queen, Phillipa Gregory. (England, War of the Roses)
- Until We Are Free: My Fight for Human Rights in Iran, Shirin Ebadi. (Iran)
- All Creatures Great and Small, James Herriot. (Wales)
- The Book Thief, Markus Zusak. (Germany)
- Life of Pi, Yann Martel. (India, the ocean)
- Anne of Green Gables, L.M. Montgomery. (Canada)
- The Diary of a Young Girl, Anne Frank. (The Netherlands)
- Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte. (England)
- Atonement, Ian McEwan. (England, WWII)
- Shanghai Girls, Lisa See. (China, U.S.)
