10 Books About Death and Dying.

I don’t know about other countries, but it seems that we in the United States have a hard time talking about death. It’s no wonder: we have products that promise us to look younger, plastic surgery, clothes to enhance our agelessness, extreme exercise and weight loss, and all those celebrities in Hollywood who seem to never age past 30. That’s why I feel when we are faced with death of any kind, whether it’s through illness, accident, suicide, violent, or even natural causes, we have a hard time meeting it when it comes.

For this very reason I think it’s important for us to have safe space to talk about it. The more we talk about it, the more accepting we are of a major part of life. Here I’d

  1. When Breath Becomes Air by Robert Kalanithi.
  2. 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher.
  3. If I Stay by Gayle Forman.
  4. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green.
  5. The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold.
  6. Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult.
  7. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.
  8. A Grief Observed by C.S. Lewis.
  9. Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt.
  10. Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech.
